Description of the panel The panel is aimed to discuss anthropology as a method of study of Muslim societies which helps to understand real forms of Islamic religious practice and the very conception of Islam at the local Muslim communities worldwide. An importance of this is clearly evident because of growth of interest to Islam on the local level. Besides that, anthropological approaches can help researchers and society in general to set problems which are usually out of discussion among “classical Islamicists”, e.g. those, who mainly are focusing on textual sources and documents. However, those problems are actual and helpful from the point of view of further development of research activities. We are planning to discuss theoretical problems of anthropology of Islam as well as practical methods and results of particular studies.
