Description of the panel

The central problem to be discussed on the panel is cult of saints and sacred places in mythological and ritual tradition of Islam. Theoretically speaking, this problem includes not only reverence of saint persons (hazrat) of the Muslim world and sacred places (mazar), but also a vast variety of other objects, given a sacred status by various cultural traditions.

The panel also will be focused on such questions as role of sacred places in traditional medical practices, gender differentiation of ritual practice, nowadays transformation of the later, including commercialization of mazar functioning due to the market exchange relations
