Description of the Panel

In the ninth century Patriarch Nicolas Mysticus said to the Muslim Emir of Crete that "the Muslims and Christians are the only two powers in the world. They are like two bright stars in the sky…" From this point we can start and declare that Islam and Christianity are the two great religions in the world. Then, the relation among them must be unique and distinguished.

In the Medieval ages, when Islam appeared, Prophet Muhammad determined a peaceful and sociable policy towards the Christians, Ahl al-Kitab. There are many Prophetic Traditions which stimulate the Muslims to be gentle with them and deal with them fairly.

When the early Muslim leaders conquered Syria, Palestine, Egypt, and the other countries they made the Christians safe and gave them all the treaties to live safely inside the Islamic society. But, later, we read that some Muslim Caliphs had a changeable policy towards them, where they devastated some churches, insulted many priests, and followed a strange policy towards them. The policy that did not relate to the Islamic principles towards Ahl al-Dhimmah. Therefore, the relation between the two sides became tensioned and some splits raised.

On the Christian side, the ignorance of many Eastern bishops and monks about Islam and the Arabic in the Medieval ages led them to write many un-correct ideas about Islam. They examined some verses (Suwar) of the Qur'an wrongly and presented a horrible image about Islam to the Eastern Christians. Their polemical writings formed a part of the Christian heritage towards the Muslims.

Although the Qur'an motivates Muslims to invite the others to be Muslims through wisdom and good advice, the Prophet Muhammad advised them to deal well with them, the real situation of the relation between the two sides now need for dialogue and for the fair conception towards the other. Also, we need to correct the misunderstanding between the two sides for peace, brotherhood, likeness, and the civilizational integration.

Therefore, this panel is aimed to discuss the following points:

  1. Understanding and Misunderstanding in the Relation between Christians and Muslims (From the Rise of Islam to the fall of the Orthodox Church of Byzantium 1453 AD.)
  2. The Theological Islamo-Christian Heritage and the Vision of the Other.
  3. Mosque vs. Church, a Fact or Theory?
  4. The principles of the dialogue among the Muslims and Christians: the Theory and Practice
