Description of the panel Mysticism in the Muslim world is a complex problem. In spite of diffused opinion, this term includes not only Sufism, but also elements of mysticism and mystical dimension of Shi‘ism, Isma‘ilism, Hurufism etc. The extensive studies of phenomenon of mystical dimension in any culture reveal two key components. There are theory as fundament and practice as realization of provided rules. Usually these two components were studied separately. But complex approach to this problem could promote a view to any mystical phenomenon as a single whole. For example, history of the Sufi tariqat grounds on this synthesis. Examination of mystical sources reveals the different relations between theoretical scientific reasoning and practices. Any theoretical assertion in mystical area supposes practical dimension. In this case, the main problem for mystics was the attempt of verbal expression for unexpressive mode (i.e. words of ecstasy). Thereby the practice rules guides any mystic from the terrestrial Law to the divine Reality, to God Himself. The panel plans to focus upon the problems of written sources (particularly, manuscripts), i.e. theoretical scientific treatises and mystical fictions from the Early Islam times up to modern period, theoretical doctrines and philosophical ideas of mystical texts, analysis of various mystical practices of the Muslim world, historical genesis and development of mystical movements and relations between them, contacts of Muslim movements and doctrines with non-Muslim environment (particularly, other mystical traditions). Special attention will be paid to difference between genesis and typology of mystical practices. Moderator of the section: P.V. Basharin (Russian State University for the Humanities; Mardjani Foundation, Moscow, Russia) |
