Custom and Law in Dagestani Written Monuments of the 5th— early 20th Centuries. Vol. 2

The second volume of the two-volume collected edition of documents of customary law from the 5-20th century’s North-Eastern Caucasus translated from Arabic and a number of Turkic and Caucasian languages by a team of historians and ethnographers from Moscow and Makhachkala.

It completes publishing classical monumental documents of customary Dagestani law. There are normative acts, law codes and ethnographic descriptions from the late XVIII to the first third of XX centuries, depicting the history of adat under the administration of the Russian Empire and the Soviet period.

Translations are supplied with commentaries and introduced by a number of theoretical issues focused on the history of customary law in the Caucasus. The book contains a facsimile reproduction of the most important textual sources and maps as well as an annotated bibliography on Dagestani adat.
