Lecture “The early period of Islam and cinema. History of cinema in Egypt, ‘holliwood of the Arab world’” and film “The Message”Demonstration of film “The Messenger” (1977) was held on 14 September at the “Inzhir” Gallery. Director, Moustapha Akkad (d. 2005), was an American of Syrian descent. Akkad’s film starring an outstanding and world known actor Anthony Quinn.
The film was preceded by a lecture delivered by Anatoliy Shakhov and titled “The early period of Islam and cinema. History of cinema in Egypt, ‘holliwood of the Arab world’”. The lecturer told about the beginning of cinema art in Egypt, how it was treated in the society and related with traditional Islamic norms and rules.
Prof. Anatoliy Shakhov is a member of the Union of Cinematographers of the Russian Federation, Ph.D. in History and an author of numerous works on history and culture in the Oriental states.
